Featured Employee – Cole Thompson

Tell us about your role? What do you like most about it?

I am a Designer Draftsman at RAM’s Geotechnical Division. I produce report figures and construction drawings for every type of project that we do, from Broadway Subway Shoring to backyard retaining walls! My favourite part of my job is streamlining our drafting processes over time – not just improving the way I do things, but also contributing to the efficiency of the department at large.

What do you find most challenging in your role?

I can work on as many as 10 different projects in a day – managing that many deadlines can be a challenge!

What advice would you give to recent new hires?

When applicable, do things the slow way that saves time later, rather than the quick way that often ends up costing time down the road.

What are 3 career lessons you’ve learned so far?

  1. Say yes to things! Involve yourself both professionally and socially – what seems intimidating at first can often turn out to be a great experience.
  2. Write down as much as you can. Your notes are not just to help you remember – they are also an essential record of project decisions.
  3. Gratitude is so important. Consider the things that you can be thankful for – especially when a colleague helps you out. Express your appreciation when they give you their time!

What do you like to do on your days off?

Trying new restaurants, cooking, and baking – all with friends involved, ideally!
