Karen Savage is one of the 2022 Dean’s Medal of Distinction recipients

Congratulations to Karen Savage for being one of UBC’s Applied Science’s 2022 Dean’s Medal of Distinction recipients!

The Faculty of Applied Science Dean’s Medal of Distinction recognizes individuals who have brought high honour to the faculty through their contributions to the advancement of its vision, mission and mandate. The 2022 recipients of the Dean’s Medal have:

  • Demonstrated exemplary work in one of the following disciplines: Engineering, Nursing, Architecture and Landscape Architecture, or Community and Regional Planning
  • Become leaders who have made exceptional impacts in their fields
  • Made longstanding or significant contributions to advance the Faculty’s mission, vision and mandate

Karen Savage, PEng, FEC is President of Horizon Engineering, which has been providing geotechnical engineering services to the building industry in BC for over 25 years.

Karen has served her profession throughout her long and highly successful career, with an emphasis on encouraging and enhancing the participation of women in engineering. She has inspired students to join the profession, and young women and peers to thrive within it.

Karen’s board work history includes with the Association of Consulting Engineers of Canada BC (ACEC-BC), Engineers and Geoscientists BC, and Engineers Canada. In 2022, Karen received ACEC-BC’s Meritorious Achievement Award.

With her technical expertise, Karen is a key resource for issues relating to geotechnical engineering, including consulting for new builds, forensic assessment, authoring of best practice guidelines, and policy development.
