Project Description

In 2015, FortisBC needed to upgrade their existing natural gas system in the Lower Mainland. This Lower Mainland Intermediate Pressure System Upgrade (LMIPSU) project replaced approximately 20 kilometres of an existing intermediate pressure gas line, one that had reached the end of its service life, with a new 30-inch gas line.

The LMIPSU line runs from the FortisBC Station in Coquitlam, through Burnaby, ending at East 2nd Avenue and Woodland Drive at the FortisBC Woodland Station in East Vancouver.

Our Role

RAM was retained by WorleyParsons to assist with pipeline design review, permitting and construction planning/management, and project management. Our scope of work entailed the following responsibilities:

  • Design review that focused on constructability issues related to installing a pipeline through a major urban centre;
  • Stakeholder (i.e. City of Burnaby/City of Vancouver/City of Coquitlam/TransLink/MoTI/Third Party Utilities) engagement and management;
  • Liaising/obtaining crossing agreements and construction services agreements with project stakeholders/utility owners;
  • Traffic planning and consultant management;
  • Utility relocation management and design;
  • Overall project and construction leadership duties.

Project Highlights

The LMIPSU project resulted in several upgrades to the outdated system, and now includes a 250-metre micro tunnel crossing, twenty trenchless intersection crossings, and 2500 utility crossings.

It also boasts two new regulatory stations, and thirty-two traffic management plans.
