As British Columbia sees the increasing effects of climate change, the natural disasters that strike our communities are getting worse. Floods are happening more frequently and with greater intensity. To help communities prepare for future flood events, BC Housing has developed a new video series that supports the design of flood-resilient homes.
In the videos, RAM’s geotechnical engineers Karen E. Savage and geotechnical engineer Diane Meehan, walk viewers through the impact climate change creates through floods and design techniques to help avoid the worst outcomes.
This four-part video series is designed to better equip viewers with the information they need about building with flood resilience in mind. It highlights concepts such as smart building design and the importance of proper maintenance of flood mitigation systems. The series also provides guidance on what to consider when building in flood-prone or at-risk flooding areas.
The information in these videos can help guide conversations with engineers and other flood mitigation experts during the design and construction process.
The full video series can be found at the BC Housing YouTube page:
- Part 1: Flood Resilience for New and Existing Buildings
- Part 2: Flood Resilience for Single-Family Homes
- Part 3: Flood Resilience for Existing Multi-Family and Strata Buildings
- Part 4: Flood Resilience for New Construction
The new series was made as part of BC Housing’s Mobilizing Building Adaptation and Resilience (MBAR) initiative, which focuses on building resiliency in the face of natural challenges and hazards. Enhance your understanding with our detailed guides and case studies. These resources provide further information to support the strategies discussed in the videos:
