Project Description

As part of the South Fraser Perimeter Road (SFPR) project, the Highway 99 and Highway 17 interchange resulted in the need to relocate a large portion of existing overhead BC Hydro Double Circuit Distribution lines into an underground concrete encased duct system. Several wooden poles were utilized in the final design, as well as 615LM of 8-125mm concrete encased ducts.

RAM’s Role

RAM was retained by the joint venture, FTG Constructors, to engage in the preliminary design with BC Hydro, as well as to manage the civil procurement, tendering, and construction. A BC Hydro qualified civil contractor was selected to complete the civil construction, working in conjunction with Fortis gas crews.

Project Highlights

Some of the major challenges faced by this work included the following:

  • Utilizing two (2) steel casing pipes for areas of high grade increase
  • Existing utilities – including a FortisBC Transmission line
  • Schedule acceleration due to project critical path
  • Existing Highway 99 crossing through an existing multi-plate tunnel that also was being used for an irrigation pipe
