Project Description

In 2020, the City of Vancouver embarked on the development of a Waste Rubble Management Plan for the City’s water and sewers departments. The plan reviewed current operations and provided recommendations to improve waste reduction and diversion programs, aiming to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fossil fuel use in City-run vehicles.

Our Role

RAM was retained to develop a list of recommended actions to reduce the amount of excavated material currently being directed to the landfill from various sewer construction projects throughout the City. These actions included recycling of asphalt and concrete, as well as stockpiling, sorting, testing and reusing native backfill where possible. RAM also developed a concept pilot project for the City to consider.

Project Highlights

In keeping with Vancouver’s goals for a more environmentally-conscious refuse disposal system, RAM was responsible for creating a waste management plan for the City’s utilities department, along with promoting a “zero waste” objective by reducing the quantity of solid waste that is bound for a landfill.

We also assisted with the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from the City’s overall operations, and in keeping with RAM’s core values, strongly encouraged and promoted the use of sustainable practices to help guide the City of Vancouver into a healthy, ecologically-sound, and resilient future.
