RAM partnered with the C.O.D.E. Initiative Foundation for the second year in a row to host a one-day workshop aimed at inspiring self-identifying girls in grades 5, 6, and 7 to explore the world of engineering. The one-day workshop featured three hands-on sessions, each focusing on a different engineering discipline.

1. Electrical Engineering Workshop: Our Electrical Engineering Workshop, led by RAM’s Electrical Designer, Raha Yazdandoost, provided an exciting introduction to electrical circuits and current. The girls engaged in hands-on learning by creating a “steady hand game.” They built circuits using copper wires, electric tape, and LED lights, crafted housings for the circuits, and designed a wand and maze layout for the game. This activity helped them grasp the concepts of ‘make’ and ‘break’ in circuit flow, sparking their interest in electrical engineering.
2. Tech Take Apart: In another session, our Principal, Geotechnical Engineer, Karen Savage, guided the girls through the Tech Take Apart workshop. Armed with screwdrivers, wrenches and pliers, the participants dismantled broken household appliances and electronics. This workshop aimed to boost their confidence in using household tools and understanding the components of various devices. By the end of the session, the girls were more comfortable with tools and more knowledgeable about the inner workings of everyday electronics.
3. Computer Engineering (Robotics) Workshop: In the computer engineering workshop, the participants had the opportunity to explore the world of programming and robotics. With the guidance of the C.O.D.E. volunteers, the girls learned how to code Sphero robots, enabling them to bring their creations to life. This coding session not only developed their computational thinking and problem-solving skills but also inspired their interest in the intersection of technology and engineering.
   The workshop was held at the RAM office located downtown, providing a professional and immersive environment for the girls to engage with the engineering activities. The collaboration between RAM and the C.O.D.E. Initiative Foundation exemplifies the shared commitment to empowering underrepresented communities in STEAM fields.
