Project Description

The New Westminster interceptor on Front Street was built in the very early years of the 2000s, with its core purpose being receiving the overflow from the Sapperton Pump Station. The hatches of this essential sewer main were not designed to the desired pressure, and therefore needed to be replaced twenty years later.

The project consisted of two phases: The first phase of the work involved welding four existing hatches closed, while the second phase of the project required repairing, replacing, or in some cases, abandoning all nineteen manholes along Front Street.

The project encountered a few challenges, which were successfully managed and overcome:

• Front Street is an extremely busy truck route. Phase One work could only be done during the night shift, and Phase Two work needed to align with the Pattullo Bridge Project;
• The diversion route of the sewer on Columbia Street was simultaneously under construction.

Our Role

RAM’s project management team was retained by Metro Vancouver to provide the following services for this project:

• Construction tendering (as required, construction could be done internally);
• Coordination of traffic management plans;
• Stakeholder management including the Pattullo Bridge Project, the municipality of New Westminster, and internal Metro Vancouver staff;
• Project cost and schedule control.
