Project Description

This project saw BC Hydro remove over 350 H-Frame wooden poles, overhead wires, and electrical equipment from downtown Vancouver.

The H-Frames were replaced with underground services in easy-access vaults, thus improving visual aesthetics, accessibility, and traffic flow in alleyways. The project also aimed to modernize building connections to the grid, both standardizing distribution voltage and improving the reliability of BC Hydro’s distribution system.

Our Role

RAM partnered with J. Wilkins to deliver the BC Hydro Contract for Design of Distribution Secondary Services for the H-Frame program, providing detailed engineering, construction coordination, and project management services.  Our team’s scope of work included:

  • Detailed underground and overhead engineering designs including scope clarification, estimates, calculations and detailed design drawings;
  • Constrained urban conditions with other third-party utilities;
  • Coordination of cut-overs and conversions of 600/347 V and 120/240 V.
