Project Description

FortisBC enlisted RAM’s Inspection team to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the Laveau Canyon Aerial Pipeline Crossing, a critical infrastructure span located in Chase, B.C.  This task involved evaluating live gas pipelines, traversing remote areas, and operating near provincial parklands.

RAM worked closely with FortisBC to ensure safety and efficiency, employing remote inspection tools to bypass difficult terrain and enhance inspection accuracy and coverage.

Our Role

RAM’s detailed inspections included the following observations and examinations:
  • Conditions of ground entry points;
  • Corrosion of pits in specific location(s);
  • Conditions of pipe supports;
  • Conditions of sable system;
  • Vibrations, if observed, due to external forces;
  • Pipe alignment;
  • Conditions of pipe coating and surfaces, such as peeling, blistering, and rust;
  • Conditions of pipe, as well as tower and cable anchors;
  • Aerial crossing supporting towers;
  • Existing leakage due to corrosion or damage;
  • Thorough analysis of collected footage for deficiencies and / or abnormalities, as well as the overall condition of the aerial crossing.

Project Highlights

RAM successfully planned and executed the inspection work utilizing visual inspection techniques alongside specialized equipment, including a Utility Task Vehicle (UTV) and an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV drone).

The UAV drone, with prospective integration of thermal imaging capabilities, was utilized to capture comprehensive video and photographic documentation along the entirety of the pipeline, covering the full height of the towers and the complete length of the aerial crossing. The drone was operated from both sides of the crossing to ensure meticulous inspection coverage.
