Project Description

Due to the aging Asbestos-Concrete watermain nearing its lifespan in the Garden Bay neighbourhood at North Pender Harbour, the Sunshine Coast Regional District authority decided to replace the existing watermain starting May 2026. NB Contracting was selected to be the Prime Contractor for this project to perform the waterworks. As the area has shallow bedrock in many of the watermain alignment trenching areas, Legacy Drilling and Blasting Ltd. was subcontracted by NB Contracting to perform the drilling and blasting work.

RAM’s Role

RAM was tasked by the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) to oversee the construction of the new watermain to replace an aging one.

Project Highlights

During the course of the construction that started from end of May 2026 to mid-August 2026, trenching and construction for the new watermain faced numerous challenges. Due to the presence of shallow bedrock at the original design alignment, alignment had to be altered to keep away from the existing line to prevent damage due to blasting work. With the proximity of the blasting to some of the houses, vibration monitoring had to be performed during the work to ensure building foundations were not affected. Trenching also removed large boulders which had to be carefully extracted and stockpiled for safe disposal. From the point of project and construction management, the project manager had to keep track of the many RFI’s and Change Orders that were created due to site condition changes. At the same time, RAM also succeeded in coordinating with both the SCRD and NB Contracting to settle on mutual-agreements on extra work pricing items and change order solutions.
