Project Description
A 4 km section on the South Fraser Perimeter Road Project in North Delta was founded on relatively solid ground but had the challenges of having extremely poor access, steep north-facing slopes and high volume of ground seepage. Of particular concern were the many historical surficial landslides which would overflow onto the BNSF rail tracks below. The single lane 4 km pioneer road started in late 2010 and took one year to establish access for excavation, wall building and eventually the delivery of bridge girders. A major milestone was achieved in November 2012 when thirty (30) 50 m long NU girders were successfully transported into their positions for the permanent bridge crossings.
RAM’s Role
RAM was retained by the joint venture FTG Constructor and provided project management services for construction and technical design review. Some of the unique challenges that were overcome from this pioneer road included:
- Construction within the clear zone immediately adjacent to active BNSF tracks
- Crossing 3 red-coded streams and 5 yellow coded streams
- Pockets of difficult soil conditions including peat, clays and high seepage zones
- Environmental concerns including erosion runoff along with noise and dust concerns from adjacent residential homes
