Project Description

Fortis Inc. (FortisBC) enlisted RAM Engineering Ltd. (RAM) to conduct a detailed inspection of the Laveau Canyon Aerial Pipeline Crossing in Chase, BC. This task involved evaluating live gas pipelines, traversing remote areas, and operating near provincial parklands. RAM worked closely with FortisBC to ensure safety and efficiency, employing remote inspection tools to bypass difficult terrain and enhance inspection accuracy and coverage.

RAM’s Role

The inspection included the following observations:
  • Condition of ground entry points
  • Corrosion of pits, specific location(s),
  • Condition of Pipe Supports
  • Condition of Cable System
  • Vibrations (if observed) due to External Forces
  • Pipe alignment
  • Condition of pipe coating and surface, such as peeling, blistering, rust
  • Condition of Pipe / tower / cable anchors
  • Aerial Crossing Supporting Towers
  • Leakage (due to corrosion or damage)
  • Analysis of collected footage for deficiencies, abnormalities and overall condition

Project Highlights

RAM successfully planned and executed the inspection work utilizing visual inspection techniques alongside specialized equipment including a Utility Task Vehicle (UTV) and an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV drone). The UAV drone, with prospective integration of thermal imaging capabilities, was utilized to capture comprehensive video and photographic documentation along the entirety of the pipeline, covering the full height of the towers and the length of the aerial crossing. The drone was operated from both sides of the crossing to ensure thorough inspection coverage.
